IPS Power were employed to assist Clancy Docwra to Install 132Kv XLPE cable between Hackney and Brunswick Wharf Sub Stations. The cable route with the exception of approximately 100m of direct burial at West Ham was entirely within a cable tunnel measuring 2.82m in diameter which also contained numerous other live cable circuits of varying voltages up to 132Kv.

The main tunnel artery ran between Hackney and West Ham Substations with three intermediate access shafts, one of which at Carpenters Lane was 30m deep and used as access for cabling. There were a total of 9 cable sections within the tunnel with each section measuring 835m.

Enabling works required cleat support steel work to be secured to the tunnel walls.

Detailed cable installation plans were compiled with cable being lowered down cable shafts using conventional Kevlar rope method. Within the tunnel bore cable pushers were used to transport the cable to its jointing location. This method enabled cable pulling tensions and side wall bearing pressures to be maintained well below design parameters.

Once installed all cables were cleated as designed with a snake introduced and intermediate short circuit straps fitted.

The remote cable ends were fed into Hackney and Brunswick Wharf Substations where they will be terminated into Gas Insulated Switchgear.
